Adult Adoptee Counselling

Adoption is a lifelong journey. While many adopted people have loving families and positive relationships, being adopted can also bring unique questions, emotions and experiences that may emerge at different stages of life.

For some, these feelings have always been present. For others, they may surface during significant life events such as becoming a parent, experiencing bereavement, entering a new relationship, or considering tracing birth family members.

As an adult adoptee, you may find yourself exploring questions about identity, belonging, loss, attachment or where you fit in the world. You may experience feelings that are difficult to explain to those who haven't lived through adoption themselves.

Specialist adoption-informed counselling offers a space where these experiences are understood without judgement. You don't have to explain or justify why adoption continues to affect you as an adult. Whatever your story, your feelings are valid.

Together, we can explore issues such as:

  • Identity and sense of self
  • Feelings of loss or grief
  • Attachment and relationships
  • Self-worth and belonging
  • Anger, sadness or confusion
  • Searching for or reconnecting with birth family
  • Navigating family relationships
  • Processing life transitions that have brought adoption-related feelings to the surface

Counselling isn't about telling you how to feel or what decisions to make. Instead, it offers a safe, confidential space to understand your experiences, make sense of your emotions and move forward in a way that feels right for you.

Finding a counsellor with specialist knowledge of adoption can make a significant difference. I offer an empathetic, adoption-informed approach that recognises the lifelong impact adoption can have while respecting that every person's story is unique.
